News Americas, NEW YORK, NY, Fri. Aug. 5, 2016: When it comes to mobile cell phone subscriptions, 5 countries in the Caribbean outnumber others, according to the latest data from the ITU World Telecommunication/ICT Indicators Database. Here is the Caribbean’s Top 5 list:
1: Dominican Republic
In the number one spot is the Dominican Republic with a whopping 8.7 million subscriptions as of 2015 out of a population of 10.4 million.
2: Haiti
Haiti was second with 7.4 million mobile phone subscribers at the end of 2015 out of a population of 10.2 million.
3: Puerto Rico
Third on the list is Puerto Rico with 3.2 million subscribers as of 2015 out of a population of 3.5 million.
4: Jamaica
In the fourth spot is Jamaica. Even though the island has 2.7 million people, they had more than 3.1 million mobile phone subscribers as of 2015.
5: Trinidad & Tobago
And rounding out the top 5 is Trinidad & Tobago. The twin-island Republic has a population of 1.3 million but as of last year had some 2.1 million cell phone subscribers.
GLOBALLY
By end 2015, there were more than 7 billion mobile cellular subscriptions globally, corresponding to a penetration rate of 97 percent, up from 738 million in 2000.
