News Americas, KINGSTON, Jamaica, Weds. Aug. 9, 2017: A Caribbean teen in the island of Jamaica has been murdered in her home for reportedly refusing the sexual advances of men in her neighborhood.
Mickolle Moulton, a 17-year-old of Arnett Gardens, St Andrew, was shot through her bedroom window Sunday night, the Jamaica Observer reported Tuesday. Her sister was also shot but Moulton was pronounced dead at a local hospital while her sister survived and is reportedly in a stable condition.
The teen was a student at Meadowbrook High School community. Principal Michael Peart, according to the paper, condemned the killing and labeled it as “senseless.”
So far no one has been arrested and Jamaica police say they are continuing to investigate.
The murder has elicited revulsion from many Jamaicans on social media though to date, there has been no outcry from local women’s groups in the country.
Crime continues to be a major issue in the country which just marked its 55th year of independence. Jamaica continues to be listed as one of the worst murder capitals of the world.
The country’s Prime Minister Andrew Holeness, largely skipped over the issue in his independence address this week, focusing largely on the positive achievements of Jamaica and with a one line subtle reference. “Jamaica to be a more peaceful nation, its citizens individually –you—and I—have to be more peaceful,” was all Holeness said.
However, Mayor of Jamaica’s capital, Kingston, Senator Delroy Williams, says there should be unity in efforts to fight crime. He added that the “best solution” must be reached to “bring this monster under control.”
