Oct. 25, 2018: Caribbean Americans took to social media yesterday to react to the stunning news of pipe bombs mailed to the homes of former President Barack Obama and former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and to the assumed location of former CIA Director John Brennan, former Attorney General Eric Holder and Maxine Waters, D-Calif., less than two weeks before the Nov. 6th mid-term election.
“When you have a President who spews hatred on a daily basis, and declared himself a ‘Nationalist,’ make absolutely no mistake about the message he’s sending to his supporters,” wrote Guyanese Mark Benschop on Facebook. “It’s as WHITE as snow. Hence, the recent pipe bombs being mailed to the folks and media house who the ‘Nationalist’ despise.”
Jamaican Shane Morrison saw the threat as the “work of the Right-Wing extremists working for the Republicans, to start some fear mongering before the mid-term elections.”
While Cayman Islands born George Ebanks said the “FAR RIGHT Neo Nazi followers are mobilizing!”
“Sad times,” he added.
Trinidad national Sheryl-Ann Marshall called it “UnfriggingREAL.”
The sentiments reflected a small sampling of Caribbean immigrants’ reaction on social media yesterday, to what New York Governor Andrew Cuomo dubbed “political terrorism” on CNN last night.
It all comes on the heels of ramped up rhetoric from the US President against many of the same people who to whom the bombs were sent.
His comments on Cuomo Prime Time came as the FBI said a second suspicious package addressed to Rep. Waters was being investigated Wednesday night.
The earlier bombs — like the explosive device that was found Monday in the mailbox of George Soros’ home in Bedford, New York — were all made with PVC pipe, which X-rays indicated likely contained shrapnel, three senior law enforcement officials with direct knowledge of the matter told NBC News.
They included a low explosive or a pyrotechnic, as in fireworks, as well as timers — likely digital alarm clocks — to set off the detonators, the sources said.
No arrests have been made.
The package addressed to Clinton was discovered on Tuesday near the Clintons’ home in Chappaqua, New York, a suburb of New York City. The one addressed to Obama was intercepted Wednesday in Washington, they said.
Meanwhile the FBI is urging anyone with information on the suspicious packages to call 1-800-CALLFBI (225-5324) or go online to tips.fbi.gov.
“This investigation is of the highest priority for the FBI,” said FBI Director Christopher Wray in a statement last night. “We have committed the full strength of the FBI’s resources and, together with our partners on our Joint Terrorism Task Forces, we will continue to work to identify and arrest whoever is responsible for sending these packages.”
