News Americas, KINGSTON, Jamaica, Sun. Sept. 25, 2011: Jamaica’s Prime Minister Bruce Golding has announced he will step down as the country’s leader.
Golding, according to a statement from Daryl Vaz, minister with responsibility for information, told the Jamaica Labor Party’s central executive at its quarterly meeting, held at the Belmont Road headquarters today that he will not only step aside soon as prime minister but as the party’s leader.
The party’s annual general conference is due in November, and Golding reportedly said he will step down as soon as a new leader has been elected.
“The challenges of the last four years have taken their toll and it was appropriate now to make way for new leadership to continue the programs of economic recovery and transformation while mobilizing the party for victory in the next general elections,” the prime minister was quoted as saying.
His announcement comes on the heels of a plea deal copped by Jamaican drug lord and JLP supporter, Christopher Dudus Coke.
