News Americas, TORONTO, Canada, Mon. April 4, 2016: The Canadian government has updated its travel warnings and alert on several nations in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The administration is urging all Canadian travelers to “exercise a high degree of caution” when travelling to the following 19 Latin America and Caribbean nations in updated advisories issued between April 2nd and March 31st.

They are:

1: Colombia

The Canadian government on April 2nd urged nationals of Canada must exercise a high degree of caution due to the unpredictable security situation in Colombia. They also warn against all travel to most rural areas of Colombia due to the presence of illegal armed groups.

2: Bolivia

Canadians are being warned to exercise a high degree of caution due to continuing political and social tensions in Bolivia. This warning was issued on March 31st.

3: Brazil

On March 31st, the Canadian government issued an updated warning urging Canadian travelers to exercise a high degree of caution due to high crime rates and regular incidents of gang-related and other violence.

4: Costa Rica

Canadians are being warned to exercise a high degree of caution due to crime in Costa Rica through an updated warning issued on March 31st.

5: Dominican Republic

Travelers from Canada are also being warned to “exercise a high degree of caution due to a high crime rate” when travelling to the Dominican Republic.

6: Ecuador

Canadian travelers to the South American nation of Ecuador are being urged to “exercise a high degree of caution due to high levels of crime and a high risk of natural disasters.”

8: Guatemala

Haiti also saw an updated warning issued against it on March 31st, with the Canadian government urging nationals to  exercise a high degree of caution due to high crime rates in various parts of the country and ongoing political tension.

Like the DR, Costa Rica and Guyana, Canadian travelers to Honduras are being urged to exercise a high degree of caution due to high crime rates in this Central American nation.

12: Jamaica

The Canadian government is also warning travelers to Jamaica to – like the DR, Guyana, Costa Rica and Honduras – exercise a high degree of caution due to the high level of violent crime.

13: Mexico

Canadian travelers to Mexico are being warned to exercise a high degree of caution due to violence in parts of the country experiencing a deteriorating security situation and high levels of criminal activity, as well as demonstrations, protests and occasional illegal roadblocks throughout the country. Canada advises against non-essential travel to the northern states of Chihuahua, Coahuila, Durango, Nuevo León (except the city of Monterrey), Sinaloa (with the exception of Mazatlán), Sonora (except the cities of Hermosillo and Guaymas/San Carlos), and Tamaulipas due to high levels of violence linked to organized crime. They also warn against travel to the western states of Michoacán (excluding the city of Morelia) and Guerrero (excluding the cities of Ixtapa, Taxco and Zihuatanejo, as well as the tourist zone of Acapulco) due to the high levels of violence and organized crime as well as to the areas of Jalisco that border the states of Michoacán and Zacatecas.

With over 122 murders so far this year, the Canadian government is urging its nationals to also exercise a high degree of caution due to a high crime rate when travelling to the twin-island Republic of Trinidad & Tobago.

Canadian travelers to the South American nation of Venezuela are being urged to exercise a high degree of caution due to the significant level of serious crime, such as murder, kidnapping and armed robbery. They also advise against all travel within 80 km of the Colombian border due to the threat of kidnapping.
