News Americas Now, Trinidad and Tobago, April 6, 2015- Fontaine Oliver Jones has been awarded the 2014-2015 Canada Hall Scholarship. The Canada Hall Scholarship of US$2,000 is tenable at the University of the West Indies in St. Augustine, Trinidad and is for students enrolled at the St. Augustine, Trinidad campus and who live on Canada Hall.
Mr. Jones is studying Civil Engineering and is expected to graduate in 2016. He is a graduate of Ardenne High School in Kingston, Jamaica where he was a member of the Swimming Club and the Drama Club. His interests include water polo, football, golf and lawn tennis. His career interest is to be a facilitator of sustainable development in the Caribbean through his work as a civil or environmental engineer.
Owen Williams, Canada Hall’s 1984 Hall Chairman, said that he envisioned a future where the scholarship would be counted as best in its class. In his message, he extended ” best wishes to Fontain Oliver Jones, our latest recipient and we hope his success will contribute to more past residents participating in this worthy endeavor.”
The Canada Hall Scholarship was established in 2013 and is funded by contributions from Canada Hall alumni in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and Jamaica. The scholarship is managed by The American Foundation for the University of The West Indies and was founded by a group of Canada Hall alumni in 2013.
The American Foundation for the University of the West Indies (AFUWI) was established in 1956 to develop an endowment fund in the United States for The University of the West Indies (UWI). Over the past decades, AFUWI has provided scholarships and grants and funded many special projects to foster the development of the University of the West Indies.
The University community is made up of the 17 member countries of Anguilla, Antigua & Barbuda, The Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Dominica, Grenada, Jamaica, Montserrat, St. Kitts & Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent & The Grenadines, Trinidad & Tobago and Turks and Caicos Islands.
