News Americas, NEW YORK, NY, Fri. Jan. 11, 2019: Canada this week updated its travel warnings on two Caribbean nations, moving them again into the ‘exercise a high degree of caution’ if travelling list.
On Jan. 9th, the Canadian government warned its citizens about travelling to Haiti and Suriname.
Canadians are being warned to exercise a high degree of caution if travelling to Haiti because of civil unrest throughout the country. “Although tensions have eased somewhat and violent crime seems to have decreased, the situation remains fluid and unpredictable,” the updated warning said. “Demonstrations and strikes could occur without notice and disrupt transportations.”
The warning for Suriname was the same – the possibility of demonstrations and civil unrest but with the added risk of crime.
“Demonstrations and strikes can occur and have the potential to suddenly turn violent. They can lead to significant disruptions to traffic and public transportation services,” the statement said, adding that “violent crime, such as armed robbery, and petty crime, such as pickpocketing, are common in Paramaribo and surrounding area” and foreigners are often targeted by criminals.
