News Americas, WASHINGTON, D.C., Fri. June 29, 2012: Caribbean American Congresswoman, Yvette D. Clarke, fresh from a win in the Primary Election on Tuesday, has expressed her “excitement and overwhelming joy” over the Supreme Court’s ruling on the Affordable Care Act.

Chief Justice John Roberts joined the Supreme Court’s four liberals Thursday to uphold the linchpin of President Barack Obama’s plan to expand health coverage to nearly all Americans, a surprise conclusion to a constitutional showdown. Chief Justice John Roberts joined the Supreme Court’s four liberals Thursday to uphold the linchpin of President Barack Obama’s plan to expand health coverage to nearly all Americans, a surprise conclusion to a constitutional showdown.

“I am pleased by the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold the Affordable Care Act, which provides coverage to millions of uninsured Americans who have been denied access to medical treatment because of pre-existing medical conditions or rising costs,” stated Representative Clarke on Thursday. “As I have said on many occasions, I firmly believe that healthcare is a fundamental human right and not a privilege! The ruling means that small businesses, seniors, young people, and Americans who have been discriminated against by insurance companies will continue to have access to coverage.”

Clarke noted that an analysis done in March 2012 showed that thousands of people in the 11th Congressional District were already benefiting from the Affordable Care Act. The analysis showed that the health care law had already provided: 390 small businesses in the district with tax credits to help maintain or expand health care coverage for their employees; 5,100 young adults in the district with health insurance; 46,000 seniors in the district received Medicare preventive services without paying any co-pays, coinsurance, or deductibles; $2.5 million in public health grants had been given to community health centers, hospitals,
doctors, and other healthcare providers in the district to improve the community’s health; and 23,000 children and 100,000 adults received health insurance that covers preventive services without paying any co-pays, coinsurance, or deductibles.

“This is a triumphant day for America, however, despite today’s historic ruling, there are many opponents who are determined to have this law repealed. It is imperative that we preserve this victory for the American people,” added Representative Clarke.
