News Americas, NEW YORK, NY, Fri. Oct. 12, 2018: A Caribbean-born jockey this week was among the gold medal winners at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games Buenos Aires in Argentina.
Haiti’s Mateo Philippe Coles made history on October 9th, winning gold for his country at Olympic and Youth Olympic level across all sports since the reinstatement of the modern Olympic Games in 1896.
Coles, 16, was part of the North American nations team, which also included Honduras, Mexico, Panama and the USA.
“I’m proud of this victory […] My real happiness is to have allowed us to talk about Haiti from another angle in the media thanks to this medal,” Le Nouvelliste quoted Coles as saying.
According to the Haitian daily, in 2016, Matéo decided to join a riding club in the United States to improve and train “an average of three hours” per day to prepare for the Olympics.
Mateo and the other winners will compete between today and Saturday to determine the champion champions.
