News Americas, BASSETTERE, St. Kitts, Weds. July 6, 2011: Look out for the resurgence of the CARICOM prime ministers subcommittee on cricket.
Newly-minted CARICOM chair, St. Kitts/Nevis Prime Minister, Dr. Denzil Douglas, announced the decision after former West Indies skipper, Chris Gayle, appealed for the body to step in, in his dispute with the West Indies Cricket Board.
The Jamaican-born Gayle and the WICB have been at loggerheads since he and senior players were criticized by coach Ottis Gibson in the World Cup aftermath.
The top batsman was omitted from the early limited-overs matches when Pakistan toured and has called the WICB attempts at reconciliation “a sham and a mockery.”
Douglas was quoted by CMC Sports Wire that the sub-committee was being reactivated “to see if we could understand the differences between the two parties, and how we can advance a true cause for West Indies cricket.”
The WICB has insisted it wants Gayle available “but not at any cost, and not on his inflexible, take-it-or-leave it terms.”
But the top cricketer for his part has said: “I have come to the bitter realization that I am not wanted by the board.”
