News Americas, BOGOTA, Colombia, Tues. July 26, 2011: Provincial and municipal elections in Colombia are proving violent this year with the recent killing of several political candidates.
City Council candidate, Alfredo Hernan Rios, was found dead near his car in a rural area of the southwestern Colombian province of Cauca, authorities said Monday. His driver, William Cote’s body, was discovered nearby.
Rios belonged to the Liberal Party and was head of the neighborhood committee in one section of Toribio.
At least a score of mayoral, council and legislative candidates have been murdered to date in Colombia.
Colombians will go to the polls in October for nationwide provincial and municipal elections.
