News Americas, NEW YORK, NY, Fri. Sept. 30, 2011: Mexico remains a favorite destination for Expedia travelers worldwide despite the rise in drug related murders in the country.
The top booking engine said this week that over 1.5 million people booked travel to Mexico using Expedia websites in the last year alone.
Marco Tagliatti, vice president of lodging supply, Latin America and Caribbean at Expedia said: “Bookings made on Expedia to Mexico grew more than 30 percent year over year in the second quarter of 2011, and Expedia’s commitment to Mexico has also grown as we continue to work closely with the Mexican tourism industry to promote travel to the country by travelers from around the world.”
His comments come on the heels of the inaugural Caribbean Tourism Organization’s State of the Industry Conference, where top airline executives, including Air Canada and Virgin, indicated that the region is facing increased competition from sun destinations such as Mexico.
Most travelers booked to the capital, Mexico City, which saw an over 50 percent increase in bookings compared to 2010.
