News Americas, MIAMI, FL, Mon. Dec. 14, 2015: A U.S. man who had fled to Cuba to escape a warrant stemming from felony firearms charges in Iowa has become the first fugitive to be returned to the United States by the Cuban government.
Shawn Wegmann, who fled to Cuba by boat in October to avoid a trial was returned by a team of U.S. Marshals who flew to Havana, Cuba and picked him up at the Jose Marti International Airport.
Wegmann will face an extradition hearing to face criminal charges in Iowa. He is facing three counts of felon in possession of a firearm and three counts of possession of a stolen firearm.
Wegmann’s arrest and expulsion were the result of efforts by the U.S. Department of State’s Diplomatic Security Service, and the U.S. Marshals Service.
