News Americas, NEW YORK, NY, Mon. Sept. 10, 2018: Five Caribbean islands registered small earthquakes on Sunday, September 9, 2018, varying between 2.7 and four on the seismic scale.
That’s according to the U.S. Geological Survey, (USGS), and The University of the West Indies, (UWI) Seismic Research Centre. The biggest tremor was recorded at 4 just 45 kilometers north of Port of Spain, Trinidad, around 7:53 p.m. on Sunday evening.
The second largest, a 3.2, occurred 48 km south of Boca de Yuma, Dominican Republic at 3:16 p.m. Sunday and 127 km N of Road Town, British Virgin at 11:52 a.m., according to the USGS.
Four smaller quakes, three registering at 2.7 and one at 2.9, were recorded in Luquillo, Arecibo and San Antonio, Puerto Rico between 11:54 a.m. and 2:34 p.m., the USGS said. Two occurred in Arecibo.
And a 2.5 quake registered 29 km south of Charlotte Amalie, U.S. Virgin Islands around 9:15 p.m. Sunday.
No immediate injuries or damage were reported.
The smaller quakes come on the heels of a 7.3 magnitude quake that struck northern Venezuela on August 20th and impacted Trinidad and Tobago and was felt in Guyana, Colombia, Barbados and Grenada as well.
The United States Geological Survey said that quake hit about 30 miles from Guiria, Sucre, Venezuela around 5:30 p.m. Est. on August 20, 2018. Damages were reported in Belmont and Port-of-Spain, Trinidad especially as the quake damaged buildings including supermarkets, stores and buildings as well as cars.
