News Americas, WASHINGTON, D.C., Weds. Oct. 9, 2013: The Congressional Committee on Foreign Affairs, headed by Congressman Ed Royce, is set to convene a hearing today to examine USAID’s administration of the Haiti reconstruction funding on the heels of the 2010 earthquake.
The hearing, entitled “Haiti: Is U.S. Aid Effective?” will begin at 10 a.m. at 2172 Rayburn House Office Building.
Those set to testify include David B. Gootnick, director International Affairs and Trade U.S. Government Accountability Office; Thomas C. Adams, Haiti Special Coordinator, U.S. Department of State and Elizabeth Hogan, acting assistant administrator, Bureau for Latin America and the Caribbean
“Earlier this year, the Government Accountability Office, Congress’s investigative arm, issued a report documenting the unrealistic objectives, costly delays, and poor oversight that has hampered USAID’s assistance efforts following Haiti’s devastating 2010 earthquake,” commented Chairman Royce. “Moreover, it raised important questions about the commitment of the Haitian Government to addressing the underlying causes of its own political and economic challenges. This hearing will examine USAID’s administration of reconstruction funding through the lens of the alarming GAO report.”
The hearing comes as many in Haiti are still living in tents three years after the 2013 earthquake.
