News Americas, FLUSHING, NY, Sat. Sept. 8, 2018: The world’s number three seed, Latin American tennis star, Juan Martin del Potro, was bested by 13-time grand-slam champion Novak Djokovic at the finals of the of the 2018 US Open on Sunday in Queens, NY. But he has chosen to remain positive.
The Argentine player took to Twitter Monday to thank his fans and express love for their support.
“It was a defeat that still hurts me, but Nole is a great champion and deserved the victory,” he posted. “I take the cutest trophy, the love of all of you, that made me feel so happy. What I felt yesterday will always be kept in my heart. Thank you very much for the support provided!”
Djokovic powered past del Potro to his 14th grand slam, 6-3, 7-6 (4), 6-3 but del Potro also went home with a handsome reward prize set at £1.44m.
Djokovic for his part paid tribute to del Potro at courtside, saying: “When I had my [elbow] surgery this year I could understand what Juan Martín went through. When you’re down, you learn. I tried to take the best out of those moments.’”
Del Potro added: “It’s not easy to speak right now, but I am so happy to play in the final against this magnificent player. I’m sad to lose but happy for Novak. I never gave up during my wrist problems. I got back after nine years, which is amazing.”
