News Americas, WASHINGTON, D.C., Fri. June 17, 2011: Jamaica will face-off against the U.S. soccer squad this weekend in the quarter-finals battle of the CONCACAF Gold Cup.
The Reggae Boyz will face the Americans at 3 p.m. the RFK Stadium on Sunday. Jamaica has outscored its foes 7-0, and has pushed forward in all three games.
Seven players on the Jamaican roster play in Major League Soccer, including goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts (Los Angeles Galaxy), midfielder Dane Richards (New York Red Bulls) and striker Ryan Johnson (San Jose Earthquakes).
The United States have scored only four goals in three games – including a 2-1 loss to Panama, partially due to the defensive posture of the teams it has faced, and partially its own ineptitude.
Meanwhile, Panama, one of three unbeaten teams remaining in the tournament – Mexico and Jamaica are the others – has been one of the big surprises. They face El Salvador at 6 p.m.
Panama has allowed at least one goal in every game, including two against winless Guadeloupe when it had a man advantage for nearly the entire game. It also upset the United States 2-1 and drew 1-1 with Canada on Luis Tejada’s stoppage-time goal.
