News Americas, GLASGOW, Scotland, Fri. July 25, 2014: Jamaica has secured the first Commonwealth Games 2014 medal for the region, thanks to Alia Atkinson.
The 25-year-old swimmer took the second spot in the he finals for the women’s 50m breaststroke event earlier today to claim a silver medal.
She finished in a time of 30.67 behind Australia’s Leiston Pickett who clocked 30.59 seconds.
Scotland’s Corrie Scott won the bronze medal in 30.75.
“I am ecstatic, even though when I look back I wanted to win the gold medal. This has woken up a lion inside of me and I can’t wait for the other events,” said the Jamaican swimmer who was the bookies favorite to win. “I’m happy for the medal but a little disappointed that I wasn’t able to get the gold. Any of the times in the other races would have won this race.”
