News Americas, MIRAMAR, FL, Fri. June 10, 2016: A 40-year-old Jamaican immigrant was charged Thursday with two counts of premeditated murder in the apparent suffocation deaths of two of her four children.

According to a court affidavit, Sophia Hines, from the Frankford section of Philadelphia, PA, drove to a relative’s home in Miramar, a suburb of Fort Lauderdale, Florida a week ago with  a 7-month-old son and a 3-year-old daughter. On Wednesday, the woman who relatives said was suffering from post partum depression, admitted  to investigators to taking a sheet and suffocating the baby first, then the little girl.

She then called her relative and told her “come home now.” Police told reporters that officers responding to the 6100 block of Southwest 38th Street near 62nd Avenue around 5:20 p.m. following a 911 call for a medical emergency involving two children. They found the children inside an apartment behind a home in Miramar.

A police spokeswoman said officers responded to the scene and performed CPR on both children until firefighters and paramedics arrived. Further attempts to revive the children failed, and both were declared dead at the scene.

Hines was taken into custody, booked and charged Thursday. Her shocked husband of four months, Anthony Singleton, told Philadelphia media he cannot believe the news.

Hines reportedly also has two adult children in Jamaica.
