News Americas, PHILADELPHIA, PA, Fri. April 27, 2012: Daniel Thomas of Edwin Allen, Jamaica came out with a bang Thursday, smashing the meet record in the HS girls discus by reaching 51.02-m.
The other four spots were also taken by Jamaicans with second place going to Gleneve Grange of Holmwood Tech with 50.33m. Tara-Sue Barnett, also of Edwin Allen was third with 49.40m while Fayon Gonzales of St. Jago and Devene Brown of St. Hugh’s grabbed the fourth and fifth spots, consecutively.
Three Jamaican high schools also advanced to the finals of the 4×800-m boys small school, which will be run today at the Ben Franklin Field in Philadelphia. Making it to the finals are Edwin Allen in a time of 8:58:50 2, Spoldings in 9:11:68 3 and Holmwood with 9:18:11.
In the large schools competition of the 4x800m, Kingston College and Cornwall College are competing in today’s finals.
The High School Girls’ 4×800 Championship of America race will see Holmwood and Edwin Allen also competing this morning. Holmwood is also in the High School Girls’ 4×400 Championship of America race today as is Vere Technical, Edwin Allen and Herbert Morrison.
With temperatures dipping, the Jamaican teams are definitely feeling the chill but working hard to do their best even as the volunteers at hospitality tent, Team Jamaica Bickle, work overtime to provide meals and a place to rest between races.
