News Americas, FLUSHING, NY, Mon. Sept. 4, 2017: The last Caribbean roots player who managed to make it to the third round of the 2017 US Open is out.
Nineteen-year-old Naomi Osaka was defeated in the third-round by Estonian qualifier Kaia Kanepi 6-3 2-6 7-5.
The loss left the Haitian-Japanese wiping away tears.
“I was more emotionally unstable,” Osaka added. It was her fifth third-round exit in seven Grand Slam starts.
Osaka was born in Japan to a Haitian father and a Japanese mother. She is an offensive baseliner, able to hit winners off both sides. She likes to attack with her big forehand, but she can also plant her feet and rip her backhand for winners as well. Her serve is consistent and very strong – up to 125 miles per hour (201 km/h) and can produce weak balls to hit winners off of.
