News Americas, NEW YORK, NY, Weds. Sept. 6, 2017, 11:41 am: The Dutch Caribbean island of Sint Maarten and French Caribbean island of Saint Martin were slammed by Hurricane Irma last night after raging past Barbuda and Antigua.
St Maarten’s world famous airport, the Princess Juliana International Airport saw safety fencing and sand thrown across the runway while the check-in lounge had been flooded and walkways completely destroyed.
A jet bridge was also torn in two.
Latest reports from the French Caribbean island of Saint. Martin this morning show that the island has taken a devastating hit from Hurricane Irma.
Government offices have been partly destroyed and the island’s Prefect and 23 staff are taking shelter in a concrete-lined room. The fire station has also reportedly been damaged while police have reported several roofs have blown off in the storm.
The island has been without electricity since 6 a.m. and many streets are also flooded.
However, so far, there has been no reported loss of life.
