News Americas, NEW YORK, NY, Tues. Oct. 15, 2019: Workers have started cleaning the streets after the end of the protests on October 14, 2019 in Quito, Ecuador.
The protests ends after a meeting between leaders of the country’s indigenous peoples and President of Ecuador Lenin Moreno in which they agreed to withdraw decree 883 – an austerity package. The package had triggered violent protests that paralyzed the economy and left seven people dead and over 1,300 wounded.
After Moreno said he was ending the subsidies, the price of diesel fuel more than doubled. Gasoline prices rose as well. Riots broke out, a state of emergency was declared, and thousands of people were arrested or injured. At one point, the chaos drove Moreno and his government to depart the capital city, Quito.
