News Americas, NEW YORK, NY, Tues. June 26, 2018: After handing Russia a thrashing on their home turf, Uruguay’s soccer team says its ready for the knockouts at World Cup 2018.
Luis Suarez and his South American teammates on Monday handed Russia a 3-0 defeat at the Samara Arena to send them out of the competition they are hosting to emerge as the leaders in Group A.
Suarez led the way as Uruguay ended Russia’s perfect start to their own World Cup in humbling fashion. He opened the scoring in the first ten-minutes with a free-kick before Denis Cheryshev deflected Diego Laxalt’s effort past goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev 13 minutes later to double the advantage.
Edinson Cavani struck again for Uruguay to help them coast to a 3-0 win and a maximum haul of nine points without conceding a single goal.
Uruguay is managed by the oldest manager at the World Cup, 71-year-old Oscar Tabarez, who suffers from Guillain-Barre Syndrome but shouts orders from the touchline on a crutch.
The team has recorded wins in all three of their matches so far at the 2018 World Cup and are fast emerging as one of the teams to watch. They will next face the runners-up in Group B in the last 16.
