News Americas, FLUSHING, NY, Sat. Sept. 8, 2018:The world’s number three seed, Latin American tennis star, Juan Martin del Potro, will be in the match of his life tomorrow against 13-time grand-slam champion Novak Djokovic.
The Argentine player secured his slot in the men’s finals of the 2018 US Open after his semi-final win against Rafael Nadal Friday, September 7th.
Nadal, the world’s No. 1 player and the defending champion in New York, retired against del Potro, trailing 7-6 (7-3), 6-2, about two hours into the first semi-final of the day in Flushing Meadows.
It’s only the second final for del Potro, 29, who won his first and only US Open in 2009 against Roger Federer.
Djokovic advanced, 6-3, 6-4, 6-2, past 2014 finalist Kei Nishikori to meet del Potro in the final. Djokovic will be seeking his 14th major title.
But del Potro is humbly celebrating the chance of a career. “I cannot believe that I will have a chance to play another grand slam final here, which is my favourite tournament,” said the Argentine. “So it will be special to me. A big challenge, as well, because I’ve been fighting with many, many problems to get to this moment. It will be a difficult match, of course. But I think I’ve been doing a good tournament. And in the finals, anything can happen. If I win, great. If not, I’ve been playing a great tournament and I will be happy anyway.”
Match time is 4 p.m. EST Sunday, Sept. 9th.
