News Americas, BERLIN, Germany, Fri. June 10, 2016: A Colombian-born artist has created a series featuring upright, oversize photo-cutouts of the headless human body of Bajan-born star Rihanna.
Ewaipanoma (Rihanna) is the latest work in Juan Sebastián Peláez’ series’. He unveiled the contemporary art work recently outside the Kunst-Werke Institute for Contemporary Art in Berlin, Germany.
The singer, actress and entrepreneur is captured in an athletic position, sporting a bikini and posing in the limelight in a glitzy gown. Her face is surreally integrated onto her chest but there is no head.
Peláez says he was inspired by drawings from sixteenth-century explorers of the New World (like Sir Walter Raleigh), who on returning home, described having encountered so-called “Blemmyae” headless natives with faces on their upper, naked bodies.
The Columbian artist first made waves with his unusual art back in 2014 when he superimposed the face of Miss Colombia 2014 Ariadna Gutiérrez onto her chest.
