News Americas, WASHINGTON, D.C., Mon. Oct. 22, 2012: The Secretary General of the Organization of American States, José Miguel Insulza, is set to be in Belize tomorrow, Tuesday, October 23, for a meeting with the country’s Prime Minister, Dean Oliver Barrow.
The Secretary General’s visit comes as Belize and its creditors are negotiating a debt restructuring proposal. Belize defaulted in September, a month after it failed to make a payment on its $548.3 million debt.
Insulza will travel to Belize following his participation today in Guatemala City in a meeting of the Group of Friends of the General Secretariat for Belize-Guatemala.
The leader of the hemispheric organization will also hold meetings with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Wilfred Elrington, the Minister of National Security, John Saldivar and the leader of the opposition, Francis Fonseca, among other authorities.
