News Americas, SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico, Tues. June 14, 2011: U.S. President Barack Obama is set to arrive here in Puerto Rico today for a five-hour visit.
The President will make history since it is the first official visit to the U.S. Island by a sitting U.S. president since John F. Kennedy traveled there in 1961.
Obama is set to arrive in Puerto Rico from Miami after speaking at Democratic Party fundraising events there. He will make brief airport remarks in San Juan before travelling to the historic Governor’s mansion for talks with Governor Luis Fortuno.
The visit is seen as part of Obama’s campaign strategy to continue to drum up support in the Latino community.
Puerto Rico has a more than 16 percent unemployment rate, far above the national level and received about $7 billion from the Obama administration’s economic stimulus.
