News Americas, HAMILTON, Bermuda, Fri. Jan. 25, 2013: Bermuda Commissioner of Police, Michael Desilva, on Thursday blamed gang violence for the double murder that rocked the island on Wednesday night.
Haile Outerbridge and Ricco Furbert were gunned down were shot and killed shortly after 9 p.m. on Wednesday night, Jan. 23rd, at Belvin’s Variety Store in Pembroke, Hamilton, Bermuda, police said. The victims’ names were not released but they were the first fatalities for 2013. They were pronounced dead at the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.
Desilva, according to the Bermuda Sun, told a press conference Thursday that the double murder was an indication of escalating tension between the gangs.
Bermuda Public Safety Minister Michael Dunkley said his government “is focused and determined to support all necessary action to bring the perpetrators of this crime to justice.”
“This Government promised the people of Bermuda all its efforts to renew communities and create a safer Bermuda,” he added in a statement. “Let me assure you that we are working closely with Government House and the Police to make that a reality. We will not rest.”
