News Americas, NEW YORK, NY, Fri. Oct. 13, 2017: Several recipients of the 2017 Bessie Awards took a cue from Colin Kaepernick and other NFL members recently by taking a knee in protest of racial injustice in the United States.
While Donald Trump continues his tweet war against the NFL and players who are protesting quietly by taking a knee and not standing for the national anthem, Bessie 2017 winner Skeleton Architecture, took a knee as well as raised their fists in solidarity.
The annual Bessies recognize exceptional work in choreography, performance, music composition and visual design. It is produced in partnership with Dance/NYC, the NY Dance and Performance Awards and has saluted outstanding and groundbreaking creative work by independent dance artists in NYC for 33 years.
The awards were named after revered dance teacher Bessie Schönberg and established in 1983 by David White at Dance Theater Workshop.
