News Americas, NEW YORK, NY, Fri. Dec. 2013: For the first time in the history of many global awards, the Caribbean musical genre of soca has won.
Trinidad & Tobago soca star Bunji Garlin was the winner in the Best International Performance category at the 2013 Soul Train Award on Dec. 1st on BET.
Garlin beat out other nominees – Machel Montano, Emeli Sande, P-Square and Iyanya to score the win for his hit song “Differentology” making him definitely “ready” for the spotlight.
“The soca artist kept listeners moving at a steady pace with this Caribbean banger,” was how the song was described on the Awards site.
“Differentology” has been the year’s biggest anthem throughout the Caribbean Carnival season and is a making a major impact in North America.
DJ supergroup Major Lazer jumped on the remix and helped fuel the buzz to a crossover audience earlier this year. More recently, the song was declared the champion on NYC’s HOT 97 FM’s Battle of The Beats competition, which currently put the track into full rotation at hip hop’s premiere station.
“Differentology” was just featured on ABC’s ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ and it’s become one of the NBA’s new favorite arena anthems, airing during the Brooklyn Nets vs. Portland Trail Blazers face-off and Toronto Raptors vs. Miami Heat game.
Garlin is now set to release his upcoming studio album, aptly titled simply: ‘Differentology,’ next year on VP Records.
His anticipated album will be his first full-length release on VP Records since 2007’s ‘Global.’
Next week (between Dec. 8th – Dec. 13th), Garlin is also slated to arrive in New York City to promote his lead single “Differentology” and deliver a special surprise performance to be announced at a later date.
