The South-South News recently launched the South-South Awards during a press conference at the United Nations. His Excellency Joseph Deiss, President of the General Assembly (PGA), Ambassador Francis Lorenzo, President of South-South News, world renowned violinist Mira Ben-Ari and top Musical Director Robin DiMaggio were present at the press conference. Ambassador Lorenzo highlighted the PGA’s interest in the importance of media and the role that it can play in the sharing of best practices in development, and the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals and presented him with an award in recognition of his commitment and support in utilizing media as a tool for development. On Monday September 19, 2011, was the Inaugural Awards were held at the Waldorf Astoria, in New York City. Guests included Dr. Vanda Pignato, First lady of El Salvador; Geri Benoit, Haiti’s Ambassador to Italy; Micheal Bearden, was principal keyboardist for President Obama’s inaugural concert at Lincoln Memorial; Patricia Velasquez, born in Venezuela, became the first Latina supermodel to work for Chanel, Gucci, Versace, just to name a few. PM Baldwin Spencer, of Antigua&Barbuda; PM Gonzales, of St.Vincent & the Grenadines, and Jamaican Olympian, Shevon Stoddart.
