News Americas, CASTRIES, St. Lucia, Fri. Dec. 27, 2013: The St. Lucian people, badly battered by a storm on Christmas Eve night, are in need of foodstuff and emergency supplies.

The government of St. Lucia says they are in need of canned goods, biscuits, infant formula, water, mattresses, blankets, hygiene kits, disaster kits and first aid kits, Generators, Clothes for Children & Adults, Chainsaws, Cutlass & files, Teddy Bears, Cleaning supplies, Gloves, Buckets, Mops, Bass Brooms, Gloves, Wheelbarrows and Shovels. Caribbean nationals in the Diaspora can drop off donation to St. Lucia House at 438 East 49th Street, Brooklyn, NY 11203.

Water supplies is needed in St. Lucia.
Residents in the communities of Anse La Raye, Bexon-Marc, Canaries, Vieux Fort North and South , have been particularly hard hit by the heavy rains, the government said. Many have lost their beds, appliances, clothes and furniture. Five lives were report lost.

In Trinidad, Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissessar, who is also the chairman of Caricom and lead Prime Minister on security in the region, has said her country will pitch in to help in the shortest possible time.

The ODPM has commenced packing of these two 40 feet containers and was expected to be ready to ship to Saint Lucia by 1 p.m. Thursday.

The Saint Lucia Air and Sea Ports Authority (SLASPA), meanwhile, it reopened the Hewanorra International Airport and safely accommodated the landing of Condor 4258 and JetBlue 881 yesterday.

The Water and Sewage Company’s infrastructure, reported that it expected to have majority of the island’s water supply operational by the weekend. The Theobalds Treatment Plant is expected to supply the North of the island by the afternoon of December 26th. There is still damage to mains and as a result, some residents may experience decreased water pressure.

They say Anse La Raye can expect pipe borne water by the weekend. In the meantime, a water truck is deployed to the community. Repairs at Canaries were problematic due to the extent of damage to the road and water ways. However, repairs are progressing quickly.
The water supply in Soufriere is intact save for the supply to Bouton which should come on stream by today, Friday. Repairs are ongoing at Hill 20. Residents can expect water by the weekend.
