News Americas, NEW YORK, NY, Sun. Oct. 28, 2012: Trinidad & Tobago-born Olympic gold medalist, Keshorn Walcott, was last night presented a Sunshine Award for his extraordinary win at the Summer Games in London.
The 19-year-old Togo native graciously accepted the award as emcee and comedian, Nikki Crosby escorted him to the stage and smiled broadly as he put his gold medal around her neck for a photo op. Walcott is the first gold medalist from T&T in 36 years.
He shyly met the attendees of the 24th annual Awards at the Axa Building in Manhattan before the ceremony, posing for photos with many who flocked to meet him. Following the award presentation, he quietly thanked the organizers and the audience for the honor to tremendous applause.
Walcott is the youngest-ever gold medal winner of the javelin in Olympic history.
Other honorees included Historian and author Professor Brinsley Samaroo.
The annual Sunshine Awards, presented by Gil Figaro, celebrated the 50th year of independence for T&T and Jamaica on October 27th. It was sponsored by United Airlines, Alize and Magdalenda Grand Resort of Tobago among others.
Magdalenda’s Nikolas Eastwick-Field was on hand for the event and helped presented one of the awards of the night. The evening also included several musical performances including from musical saw player, Moses Josiah of Guyana, Chalkdust of T&T and The Mighty Sparrow of Grenada and the induction of several musicians into the Hall of Fame, including Lord Canary of Guyana.
