News Americas, WASHINGTON, D.C., Weds. May 27, 2015: The Organization of American States (OAS) officially has a new secretary general.

Former Foreign Minister of Uruguay, Luis Almagro Lemes, on Tuesday was sworn in during a meeting of the Permanent Council in Washington, DC.

The Uruguayan diplomat was elected Secretary General on March 18th with 33 votes in favor.

Secretary General Almagro was elected for a period of five years and will serve from May 2015 to May 2020. He is the second Uruguayan to lead the OAS, after Jose Antonio Mora (1956-1968).

He takes over from Chilean José Miguel Insulza who served as SG from 2005-2015.
