Secretary General of the UN World Tourism Organization, (UNWTO), Taleb Rifai in Jamaica.

News Americas, MONTEGO BAY, Jamaica, Thurs. Nov. 30, 2017: Secretary General  of the UN World Tourism Organization, (UNWTO), Taleb Rifai has outlined five goals he hopes tourism globally can deliver during opening remarks at the Global Conference on Jobs and Inclusive Growth: Partnerships for Sustainable Tourism in Montego Bay, Jamaica. Here are the five:

1: Opportunities for inclusive economic growth;
2: Opportunities for more and better jobs, decent jobs;
3: Opportunities to distribute wealth and share prosperity;
4: Opportunities to better know and respect each other, and;
5: Opportunities to protect our natural and cultural heritage.

“In short,” Rifai said, “Growth, inclusion and progress are our means to achieve
sustainable development … because sustainability, my friends, is to sustain LIFE on earth.”

He said tourism should hope to “elevate LIFE on earth to a higher level of progress and quality for all the people … BECAUSE … it’s really all about people – they are at the center of all challenges.”

“Growth and sustainability, Progress and sustainability, should go hand in hand, not either – or, but a win-win equation,” Rifai added.
