News Americas, NEW YORK, NY, Fri. Nov. 16, 2018: About 300 people gathered at Tropical Paradise in Brooklyn, NY on Wednesday night, Nov. 14, 2018, to pay tribute to the late Trinidad and Tobago-born Calypsonian, Winston McGarland Bailey, more popularly known as The Mighty Shadow.
The tribute to the legendary calypsonian was presented by Herman Hall, publisher of Everybody’s Magazine. It featured Charlie Simpson, the promoter who took carnival and Shadow to Jamaica as well as Donna Cox, Consul General of Trinidad & Tobago in New York and Penelope Beckles, Trinidad & Tobago’s Ambassador to the United Nations.
The highlight of the evening was calypsonian Count Robin, portraying The Shadow in his trademark all black coat and hat, bringing him back to life with his performance.
Shadow passed away at a hospital at 3 a.m. on Tuesday Oct. 23, 2018. He was 77. He was conferred with an Honorary Doctor of Literature degree from the University of the West Indies posthumously for his contributions as a musical composer.
