News Americas, MIAMI, FL, Mon. Aug. 22, 2011: Tropical Storm Irene was last night moving past St. Croix as it spread storm conditions over eastern Puerto Rico.
The storm has already triggered several warnings for southeastern Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands as it hovered about 10 miles north west of St. Croix and about 90 miles east of San Juan, Puerto Rico.
At 8 p.m. last night, Irene’s maximum sustained winds were 60 mph and it was on rack to move near or over Puerto Rico Sunday night and near or over the Dominican Republic today, August 21. Weakening is likely later today as the center moves near or over the DR.
A hurricane warning was last night in effect for Vieques and Culebra and the entire coastline of the Dominican Republic while a hurricane watch is in effect for the U.S. Virgin Islands.
A tropical storm warning is also in effect for the British Virgin Islands, Haiti, St. Martin and St. Barthelemy while a tropical storm watch is in effect for central Bahamas.
