News Americas, FLUSHING, NY, Thurs. Sept. 5, 2013: Defending US Open champion suffered a Swiss shock at the U.S. Open Thursday that sent him packing from the tourney – frustrated scream and all!
Murray simply self-destructed and was beaten by the No. 9-seeded Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka, 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 in their quarter-finals match-up at Flushing Meadows.
The match included Murray dramatics from the opening. After just one set, he slammed his racket into the court and mangled it once he reached his chair on the sideline.
After the second, he gestured over to coach Ivan Lendl and let out a frustrated scream.
The win means Wawrinka has advanced to the first Grand Slam semifinal of his 11-year pro career. Wawrinka had 45 winners to 15 for Murray. His serve averaged 119 mph — 9 mph faster than Murray — and he won 37 of 42 points in which he got his first serve into play.
“It feels amazing for sure, especially here, especially after that match,” said Wawrinka, who didn’t face a break point over his 14 service games. “He’s the defending champion. He’s a tough opponent.”
He will next face the winner of the Novak Djokovic vs. Mikhail Youzhny semifinal match-up.
As for Murray he calmed down enough to say after: “I would have liked to have played a little bit better. I’ve had a good run the last couple of years. It’s a shame I had to play a bad match today.”
This was Murray’s earliest exit from the US Open since 2010.
