News Americas, NEW YORK, NY, Tues. Dec. 19, 2013: For weeks since the selection of Jamaican singer Tessanne Chin for NBC music reality show, The Voice, Jamaicans across the U.S. Diaspora have tweeted, voted, marketed and organized with the precision of an election campaign. Last night, as the competition entered its finale, the campaigning reached a crescendo, with even Jamaican American Congresswoman, Yvette Clarke getting in on the action.
Clarke turned her post-birthday soiree and holiday cocktail party at Woodland Restaurant on Flatbush Avenue in Brooklyn, New York into a “Voting Party” for Chin.
“For weeks we have watched our darling Tessanne deliver one flawless performance after another on The Voice,” she said. “As people of Jamaican and Caribbean ancestry and heritage, we feel a special infusion of pride when any one of us excel in our chosen paths and we are compelled to revel in that success. I encourage everyone to get on every device available and vote at the maximum to ensure victory for Tessanne.”
Telecommunications giant, Digicel, has gotten into the action as well, handing out branded Team Teassanne T-shirts at voting parties in local bars. Across the country, from New York, to Miami to Maryland, wherever Jamaicans live, they have mobilized for Chin.
Emails encouraging all to vote and laying out the process were broadcast by blast emails while colorful graphics are being posted on social media including the one below.
Facebook and Twitter have become the social media of choice for many to weigh in on the performances or to encourage each other to download Chin’s songs and tell friends and relatives to vote as many times as possible.
And last night was no exception. With each performance at the finale, Jamaican fans took to Facebook to voice their comments.
“It Dun! Yes Iye!,” wrote Karen Grey, as Chin delivered a pitch perfect performance on three songs Monday night, beginning with her audition song, ‘Try’ by Pink, followed by her duet with her Coach Adam Levine on ‘Let It Be,’ and concluding with her cover of Whitney Houston’s classic, ‘I Have Nothing.’
The 28-year-old singer showed she has grown by leaps and bounds since her ‘Hideway’ single, delivering a phenomenal vocal performance that was on par with many global superstars.
Wearing a sleeveless black pantsuit, Chin’s vocals on ‘Try’ was stellar but it soared in her duet with Levine, which included a reggae chorus, skillfully placed and delivered as a tribute to her culture but also to showcase her vocal range – all while looking stunning in a black and white gown.
But the show stopper was yet to come as Chin, donning a red gown, showed why she is in the finale with a phenomenal rendition of the Houston classic that showcased her high vocal range superbly but was also laden with emotions that tugged at the heart and left many, including her fans in awe.
“I think everything you do draws me in,” said a beaming Coach Levine. “Your ability is so amazing.”
And on Facebook, fans agreed.
“Only three words……….W.O.W……..World Outstanding Woman,” said Michael Williams.
“Tessanne all the waaaaaaaaay,” added Audrey Foster.
“@Tessanne reminds me of Usain Bolt… undeniable world class talent,” added Ingrid Riley.
“It’s time to VOTE for Tessanne Chin until 11 am EST tomorrow,” urged Miami Attorney Marlon Hill. “Your work is not done until the last vote is in. CALL. TEXT. CLICK ONLINE. Download all her performances. #TeamTessanne.”
Forgotten to the Jamaican fans were the other two contestants from last night, Will Champlin of Team Adam and Jacquie Lee of Team Christina Aguilera. In their minds, Chin had already won and they were doing everything possible to make the power of their votes in the United States, count.
As one graphic creatively summed it up accurately:
Fans will now have to wait until tonight at 9 p.m. EST to find out who wins or who goes home. Voting will be open until 11 EST today.
