News Americas, FLUSHING, NY, Tues. Sept. 3, 2013: Serena Williams is in the semis of the U.S. Open and on her way to possibly recapturing the 2013 title.
Williams on Tuesday night faced Carla Suarez Navarro, who celebrated her birthday on Sept. 3rd.

But the celebration was more for Williams than Navarro since he was beaten 6-0, 6-0 at the Arthur Ashe Stadium.

“I just found out it was her birthday as we walked out on court,” said Williams, who advances to the semifinals to face world No. 5 Li Na. “The conditions were tough and it definitely wasn’t her best tennis.”

Williams, the four-time US Open champion, is trying to become the first player to defend a crown in New York since Kim Clijsters did so in 2010. Williams is also seeking a personal-best ninth title in 2013; she’s 65-4 on the season.

“I hope I haven’t peaked yet,” Williams said after the win, her 70th in 14 appearances at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. “I’m just trying to do the best that I can.”
